Store SEO starts with the paths shoppers use to find products. Make important collections and products reachable through normal links, with useful information about range and suitability. A search box alone is not a reliable discovery route for crawlers.

1. Give collections and products distinct jobs

Map broad shopping needs to collections and specific choices to products. Write collection introductions that help buyers compare a range, and product descriptions that answer practical questions using accurate product information. The service-page content checklist offers a useful content review pattern, while internal linking for service websites explains descriptive links.

2. Decide what filters and variants should do

Faceted filters can create many similar URLs. Decide which filtered pages offer distinct search value, then check canonical, internal-link and crawl behaviour against the platform's actual controls. Keep useful product variants understandable to shoppers and search engines; do not assume one setting fits every store.

3. Plan stock and platform changes

For temporarily unavailable products, keep helpful information and alternatives where appropriate. For permanently removed products, decide whether a genuine replacement exists before redirecting; otherwise return an appropriate missing-page status. Before a Shopify or WooCommerce migration, inventory URLs and use the redesign migration checklist to test redirects, canonicals, feeds and purchase tracking.

Start with five real shopping journeys

Choose an important collection, a product, a filtered result, an unavailable item and a product variant. For each, record the URL, how a shopper reaches it, what they need to decide and the exact obstacle.

  • Can shoppers reach the page through normal links and return to the relevant collection?
  • Are price, availability, product differences and delivery information clear where applicable?
  • Can someone choosing the wrong variant correct that choice easily?
  • Does an unavailable product explain the situation and offer genuinely relevant alternatives?
  • Can the shopper continue to the intended next step on a phone?

Review indexing separately from usability: a useful filtered shopping page does not automatically need its own search result. Use the findings to choose a specific collection or template to improve before changing store-wide settings.
